B. Answer the following questions in about 30 words each.

1. How did Swami’s father react when Swami told him that he was not going to school? How different was his reaction from that of Swami’s mother?

Answer: Swami’s father was angry when he told him that he was not going to school. His father insisted on him going to school in spite of the headache and although it was late to go to school. But Swami’s mother’s reaction was not the same. She was generous and suggested that he should stay at home.

2. ‘Father’s behaviour took an unexpected turn.’. What was unexpected about Swami’s father’s behaviour?

Answer: Swami thought that his father would act politely and allow him to stay at home for the day. But against Swami’s expectations, his father got hyper and wrote a letter to the principal complaining against Samuel’s aggression.

3.Why didn’t Swami hand over the complaint letter to the headmaster in the morning?

Answer: Swami has given the wrong description about Mr. Samuel to his father and he knew about it. This is the reason why he did not hand over the complaint letter to the headmaster in the morning. Swami was waiting for Mr. Samuel to do something that would justify his description.

4. Could Swami deliver the complaint letter to the headmaster after the school? Why/Why not?

Answer: Swami was successful in annoying his teacher Samuel through the school hours. At the end Mr. Samuel had to can him and Swami found his teacher’s act justified for the punishment. So at the end of school, he went to the headmaster’s office to deliver the complaint letter. But Swami could not deliver the letter because the principal had left school early.

II. HOTS

‘Swami went to school feeling that he was the worst perjurer on earth.’ Describe Swami’s feelings at this point. Why did he feel like ‘the worst perjurer’?

Answer: Swami did not want to go to school that day and he gave a false description about his teacher Samuel to his father. He told his father about Mr. Samuel’s bad behaviour. Swami’s father after listening to Swami wrote a complaint letter to the headmaster. Swami felt very bad after reading the letter. The letter could dismiss his teacher or hand him over to the police. In reality, Mr. Samuel was not a bad teacher. Therefore, Swami felt as the ‘worst perjurer on earth’

III. Life Skills

What impression have you formed of Swami’s relation with his father? How should children and their parents behave with each other?

Answer: Swami’s father was a disciplined and strict natured person. He wanted his son to be like him. Therefore, he did not support Swami’s decision to miss school. But he was also a sincere and caring father. He did not like when Swami told him about the bad behaviour of his teacher Samuel. So, he wrote a complaint letter to the principal so that Swami and other school children don’t have to bear Samuel’s punishments. Swami’s father also asked the headmaster to punish Samuel for his bad behaviour towards the students.

IV. Values

Swami gives a very unfair description of Samuel to his father. How would you have behaved, had you been in Swami’s place?

Answer. For self-attempt.

V. Writing Skills

A. Imagine that you are Swami. Write a diary entry relating your experience with Samuel in the school.

Answer:

12 August, 20XX, 7 p.m

Monday

It was not a good day at all. I did not want to go to school today. But my father is very strict and he insisted on me going to school no matter what. I had to lie to him that my teacher Samuel would beat me for reaching school late. I also told him several lies about my teacher and how he beats the children. My father got really serious and he wrote a complaint letter to the headmaster. He asked the principal to punish Smauel for his cranky behaviour with the students and asked to punish him. I read the letter and felt very bad because I knew Samuel was not a bad teacher. In spite of reaching school late and not doing my homework he did not tell me anything. In the last period Mr. Samuel came again and I decided to disturb him. I started asking him silly questions loudly. He mildly scolded me several times and asked me to shut my mouth. But I continued my bad behaviour and at last he had to punish me. He took a stick from the drawer and beat me. I provoked him to do so because I wanted to prove my father’s letter right. I did not do the right thing.

B. Imagine that you are Samuel. Write a diary entry expressing your surprise at Swami’s strange behaviour in the class and your feelings at caning him.

Answer:

12 August, 20XX, 7 p.m

Monday

I encountered a very strange experience today in my class. Swami, one of my students, came in half an hour late in my arithmetic class. When I asked him the reason for his late arrival, he said he had a bad headache. He also had not done his homework. I did not say anything considering his bad health. Then again I went for my history class, it was almost four then. Swami started behaving in an odd manner. I have never seen him behaving like this before. He started asking me weird questions loudly. I still did not say anything and just gave him a warning. I mockingly told him that his headache had made him mad. Then I shifted my attention to other students and asked them questions from the Mughal period. Swami stood up all of a sudden and interrupted with some annoying questions. I could not control my anger any longer. I had no choice but to cane him to stop his bad behaviour. But my actions made me feel bad. I am totally against physical punishment in school and I never punish my students like this. But Swami left no other choice for me. Hopefully, he never behaves like this again.
